Race: New York City Spring Series Race#1
Location: Central Park, New York, NY
Distance: 30 Miles
Date: Sunday, March 7, 2004 Racer: J.P. Partland

A nice speedy start to the season. THanks to the guys for helping me at the race. We shared covering attacks for most of the race.

The winning move went with about 10 miles to go, just as I was being criticized for having a conversation during the race. Luckily, the guy who I was talking with countered and I followed. We made the bridge and the move worked--which I consider amazing, as there were 11 guys in the break.

After the break was pretty well set, people started screwing around at 110th street. Lots of skipping pulls and pleas of forgiveness for not being able to tolerate the pain, then attacking. I thought I had played most of my cards right as I ended up on Pulla and Pollo's accelerating wheels at E72. I thought They were setting up for a long one. Unfortunately, it was a feint and I had overcommitted. I led it out and got passed by 7 guys--Pollo just taking me on the line. On the bright side, I beat former Division I pro Davide Frattini, a winner of the "baby Giro," the amateur version of the Giro d'Italia. On the bad side, second-placed rider Luis Acquino was not disqualified for his repeated attacks through the jogger's lane.

Kudos to Keith Snyder for snagging fourth in the Category III-IV race.

So wonderful to have the taste of racing back. Can't wait for more.
